There are three boards that govern three essential functions of the VSB: Mandatory Continuing Legal Education, Discipline, and the Clients' Protection Fund. All members of VSB boards serve 3-year terms, with two consecutive terms allowed.

The Clients’ Protection Fund Board makes monetary awards to people who have suffered financial losses because of the dishonest conduct of Virginia lawyers.
The Disciplinary Board hears the most serious cases of lawyer misconduct. The Board issues written opinions following its hearings.
The Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board administers the program that was established by the Supreme Court of Virginia.
