Shelbie Hampton Receives Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award

Shelbie Hampton of the University of Richmond School of Law has been awarded the 2026 Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award.

Administered by the Access to Legal Services Committee, the award was established to honor extraordinary law student achievement in the areas of pro bono and under-compensated public service work in Virginia.

Hampton is a recent graduate of the University of Richmond School of Law. Before law school, she worked for Child Protective Services and as a middle school science teacher in Texas. During law school, she participated in a number of pro bono programs through the Carrico Center and served as a student program manager. Through the center, Hampton assisted with many no-fault divorces, participated in the Name and Gender Marker Change clinic for three years, and assisted with Pro Bono Wills clinics.

In addition to the Carrico Center, Hampton participated in both the Access to Justice and Children’s Defense Clinic, providing free legal representation on a variety of matters, including family law, education, delinquency, and truancy. She is also committed to non-legal public service, participating in numerous service projects in the Richmond community.

Hampton will clerk for a year at the Eastern District of Virginia, then plans to return home to Texas. Although she is leaving to be near family, she is incredibly grateful for her time in Virginia and will miss the community here.

Hampton will receive her award at the VSB's Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach.
