President-elect Susan B. Tarley Seeks Members for VSB Committees

Susan B. Tarley, president-elect of the Virginia State Bar (VSB), seeks active and in-good-standing Virginia lawyers willing to serve on special and standing committees in 2026. 

Much of the work of the VSB is accomplished through its committees, and it needs lawyers willing to serve. Appointments will generally be for a three-year term, running from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029, with the possibility of another three-year term to follow. The work of the committees is essential for our self-regulating profession and may require substantial time to fulfill the requirements of the positions.

The application process for volunteers for the VSB’s committees begins January 5 and runs through March 6 for terms beginning July 1, 2026.

  • Applicants submit their resume along with the VSB’s Committee Preference Form to [email protected] during the application period for consideration.
  • The president-elect makes the selection of members to fill vacancies and all applicants will be notified of the decision in June.

Standing Committees:*

  • Access to Legal Services
  • Budget & Finance
  • Lawyer Discipline**
  • Legal Ethics
  • Professionalism

Special Committees:

  • Bench-Bar Relations
  • Better Annual Meeting
  • Judicial Candidate Evaluation
  • Lawyer Insurance
  • Lawyer Referral
  • Resolution of Fee Disputes
  • Technology and the Future Practice of Law

*Lawyer vacancies on standing committees are limited due to requirements for a specific number of Executive Committee and VSB Council members to serve on each committee. To encourage participation—and recognizing the time commitment—lawyers are generally limited to serve on one committee. The number of available positions is limited, but an attempt to accommodate as many people as possible will be made.

**It is preferred that members of the Committee on Lawyer Discipline have served on a local disciplinary district committee. More information.
