Mills Anderson "Andy" Bradshaw Receives Tradition of Excellence Award
Mills Anderson "Andy" Bradshaw, of M. Anderson Bradshaw, P.C., has been awarded the Virginia State Bar General Practice Section’s Tradition of Excellence Award. The award recognizes a Virginia lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence in Virginia, enhances the image and esteem of attorneys in the Commonwealth, and has devoted significant amounts of time, efforts, and/or funds to activities that benefit their community.
James J. Knicely of Bray Knicely Law nominated Bradshaw, saying that he is the quintessential Virginia “country lawyer.” “Andy is a careful, detail-oriented lawyer (in the school of Justice Lewis Powell), a man of integrity, fair and balanced, and humble,” Knicely said. “He is deserving of recognition for his excellence as a ‘citizen-lawyer’ in the great tradition of the Virginia legal profession.
Bradshaw was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1976 and has practiced solo in Toano since 1978. Toano, a one-time rural village, is now a bedroom community for Williamsburg and Richmond. He graduated from Washington & Lee University and went on to obtain his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia. His practice has centered on real estate and estate planning.
Over the years, this has resulted in several assignments by the local courts as a commissioner in chancery and special commissioner in real estate matters. Bradshaw was appointed in 1998 and then elected in 2004 to serve on the James City County Board of Supervisors. Later, in 2013, when a supervisor vacancy left the board equally split, Bradshaw was appointed by the four Judges of the 9th Judicial Circuit to fill the position temporarily.
Other areas of Bradshaw’s community service have included serving as an elder and Sunday school teacher at the historic, nearly 200-year-old Olive Branch Church, as a director of child development services, and on the advisory board of the local Salvation Army, and as a supporter of the now-closed Williamsburg Farmer’s Market.
The Tradition of Excellence Award will be presented to Bradshaw during the general session of the VSB Annual Meeting on June 5.
