The Ethics Hotline is a confidential consultation service for Virginia lawyers. Before you submit a question, please review the frequently asked questions on the ethics main page.

Submit Online to the Ethics Hotline: Any Virginia lawyer may submit a legal ethics question online. Ethics staff generally will respond within the same day to inquiries received during business hours.

Call the Ethics Hotline: Any Virginia lawyer may seek informal ethics or unauthorized practice of law advice by calling the Ethics Hotline at (804) 775-0564. You will be prompted to leave a voice mail message, and your call will be returned in the order of receipt.

Out-of-State Lawyers: Any out-of-state lawyer may submit a legal ethics question about Virginia state law by emailing [email protected]

Non-lawyers: If you are a member of the public and are questioning the ethical practice of a lawyer, please see File a Misconduct Complaint or call the Intake Department at (804) 775-0570. Non-lawyers may submit unauthorized practice of law questions. Virginia State Bar staff lawyers cannot give ethics opinions or legal advice to non-lawyers.
