Edward Bennett Lowry 1945–2023

Edward Bennett LowryThe VSB mourns the loss of former Virginia State Bar President Edward Bennett Lowry of Charlottesville who passed away on December 6, 2023, at the age of 78.

A 1971 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Mr. Lowry practiced his entire career with the firm of MichieHamlett. He focused on commercial transactions and negotiations and was also a skilled trial attorney.  

Mr. Lowry’s service at the VSB included serving on the Board of Governors of the Section on the Education of Lawyers, on the Clients’ Protection Fund Board, on the Committee on Judicial Candidate Evaluation, on the faculty of the Professionalism Course, and as an ABA delegate.

In addition to his 1997-98 VSB presidency, Mr. Lowry served as co-chair of the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents and was president of the Charlottesville Albemarle Bar Association. He was a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and the Virginia Law Foundation. Lowry also served as an adjunct professor at UVA Law School and taught numerous Continuing Legal Education seminars.
