Volunteers Sought for VSB Board and Committee Vacancies

The Virginia State Bar is seeking volunteer attorneys to fill vacancies in a number of key roles at the VSB, namely:

  • As at-large Council members;
  • On the Clients’ Protection Fund Board (reimburses those who suffer a financial loss due to attorney malfeasance);
  • On the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board (administers the MCLE program established by the Supreme Court of Virginia)
  • On the Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee (interviews candidates for vacancies on the bench); and
  • In the American Bar Association House of Delegates.

Where are the vacancies?

The list below identifies anticipated vacancies. All terms begin July 1, 2024. Note: There are vacancies that may not become available, as some current members are eligible for reappointment.
 
Council Members at Large:
3 lawyer vacancies; however, 3 current lawyer members are eligible for reappointment
Term is 3 years (members may serve two consecutive terms)
Appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia

Clients’ Protection Fund Board:  
2 lawyer vacancies: 2 current lawyer member from the 7th disciplinary district and a Member at Large are not eligible for reappointment
Term is 3 years (members may serve two consecutive terms)
Appointed by VSB Council
Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board:  
3 lawyer vacancies: 2 current lawyer member from the 7th and 13th disciplinary district is not eligible for reappointment; however, 1 current lawyer member is eligible for reappointment
Term is 3 years (members may serve two consecutive terms)
Appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia
Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee:  
2 lawyer vacancies: 2 current at large members are not eligible for reappointment
Term is 3 years (members may only serve non-consecutive terms)
Appointed by VSB Council
American Bar Association House of Delegates:
2 lawyer vacancies (President-elect and YLC conference member); however, 0 lawyer members are eligible for reappointment
Term is 2 years (members may serve three consecutive terms)
Term commences September 1, 2024
Appointed by VSB Council
 

What is the application process?

The VSB Nominating Committee will review applications and make recommendations to the VSB Executive Committee and Council for consideration at their February 2024 meetings. The Council will make recommendations for the MCLE Board and Council at large member to the Supreme Court in March 2024. 
 
The application period runs from November 28 through January 5, 2024.

The VSB seeks balance and diversity in committee membership, not only in race and gender, but in geography, the types of practice areas in which lawyers are engaged, and the settings in which lawyers practice (e.g., solos to corporate counsel, prosecutors to defense).
