Family Law Section Announces Third Annual Writing Competition 

The Virginia State Bar Family Law Section (“Family Law Section”) and the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (“AAML”) are sponsoring the third annual writing competition open to second and third year law students attending Virginia and Washington, D.C., law schools.  

The top three winning entries will be published in the Summer issue of the Virginia Family Law Quarterly. The Quarterly is the official publication of the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section and is distributed to approximately 2,000 Virginia judges, lawyers, and professors. The top entry will also be awarded the following cash prize: 

1st place - $1,000

The top three entries will additionally receive a plaque from the Family Law Section commemorating their achievement, which will be presented at the Virginia State Bar Annual Advanced Family Law Seminar in Richmond in April. Presentation will be made by the current president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Entry topics can be on any aspect of Virginia family law and must be no longer than 2,500 words. Any entries longer than 2,500 words will not be considered. All entries should be sent to the below email address by no later than February 1st 2024. The winning entries will be determined in the sole discretion of the five-person panel made up of the current chair of the Family Law Section Board of Governors, president of the Virginia Chapter of the AAML, one AAML Fellow appointed by the president, a judge from the Virginia Court of Appeals or a Virginia circuit court, and the editor of the Quarterly.
