Janet Van Cuyk Named VSB Deputy Executive Director

Effective January 19, Janet Van Cuyk will become Deputy Executive Director of the Virginia State Bar, taking a role left vacant when Cameron M. Rountree was promoted to Executive Director.

Says Rountree, “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Janet to the VSB. Her leadership experience, analytical ability, and congenial demeanor make her an excellent addition to the staff. I know she will continue her great track record and lead us to be an even more effective and responsive organization.”

Van Cuyk is the former assistant director of the Virginia Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, a lawyer-funded, confidential program that helps Virginia lawyers, judges, law students, and other members of the legal community struggling with substance use or mental health issues.

As Deputy Executive Director, Van Cuyk will report to Rountree while overseeing operations for the VSB, including Access to Legal Services, Bar Services, Ethics, and the Clerk’s Office.

Prior to joining VJLAP, Van Cuyk worked in private practice and in government law. She says of the new role, “I am delighted to be joining such a wonderful group of professionals. For 85 years, the VSB has regulated our profession with the highest level of integrity and competence. I look forward to continuing this tradition and bringing my passion for advancing the availability and quality of legal services while working to enhance professionalism, integrity, and wellness throughout the legal profession in Virginia.”

Van Cuyk has an undergraduate degree from Boston College; a master’s in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University; and her law degree from the University of Virginia.
