Investigator — Southwest Virginia

The Virginia State Bar, the state agency that regulates the practice of law in Virginia, seeks an investigator to investigate complaints of ethical misconduct by attorneys and the unauthorized practice of law. The primary territory is Southwest Virginia, but the successful candidate may also receive assignments in other areas of the state.

The successful candidate should have significant experience in investigative work and/or the legal field including:

  • interviewing witnesses;
  • investigating complex financial transactions;
  • obtaining and researching records;
  • analyzing legal documents, including pleadings and court orders;
  • evaluating and organizing evidence;
  • drafting comprehensive reports of investigation and other documents; and
  • testifying in court proceedings.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently from a home office environment in Southwest Virginia, including but not limited to Roanoke, Lynchburg, Bristol, Blacksburg, or surrounding areas and willing to travel throughout the state, including overnight trips. Valid driver’s license required. In addition, the candidate must be able to prioritize assignments, maintain strict confidentiality, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills. College degree required. Experience in computer forensics, exposure to a wide range of legal matters, such as family law, criminal law and immigration law, and/or JD are favorable.
