Director of Bar Services

The Virginia State Bar (VSB) is seeking an experienced meeting professional to lead a dedicated six-person team in coordinating the activities of more than 25 volunteer member groups, each focusing on a distinct area of law, the VSB conferences, and a range of educational and professional events, including the mandatory Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course. This role is central to advancing the VSB’s mission of supporting the legal profession in Virginia by ensuring high-quality programming, continuous professional development, and maximum efficiency and value to VSB’s members.

Position Description:

As the Director of Bar Services, you and your team will oversee all aspects of program and event development, planning, management, and execution for the VSB and:

  • Develop processes, concepts, and collaborations with volunteers and colleagues across the VSB to advance meeting and program goals, objectives, and priorities.
  • Lead and collaborate with lawyers, judges, educators, and other stakeholders to ensure all VSB programs and course offerings meet the highest standards.
  • Negotiate contracts for event venues and oversee logistical arrangements to ensure smooth execution of all scheduled events.
  • Develop and manage team workflows, staff performance, program budgets, and expenditures, ensuring fiscal responsibility and resource optimization.
  • Act as a staff liaison for meetings and committees, facilitating effective communication and collaboration across all levels of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, communications, education, or a related field.
  • Experience managing, motivating, and guiding teams.
  • Experience planning and executing complex educational programs, conferences, and/or professional meetings.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets and contracts.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional innovative problem-solving, strategic planning, and organizational skills.
  • Strong project and time management skills with great attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate online registration, virtual meeting, and engagement tools and platforms.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.

Additional Job Details:

  • This is a full-time salaried position located in the VSB office in Richmond, Virginia.
  • The anticipated start date is August 19, 2024.
