Welcome to the New VSB Website and Member Portal

The Virginia State Bar has just launched a new website and member portal to improve services and access to information for Virginia lawyers and the public.

The modernized website features a cleaner design and improved functionality, making it easier for users to find the information they need. The site's new search function is more intuitive and provides more accurate results, and the navigation has been streamlined to help users quickly find the content they are looking for.

In addition to the improved design and functionality, the new website is also more secure, with enhanced security measures to protect user data. The site is also fully accessible, with features that allow users with disabilities to navigate the site and access its content.

The new website is part of a broader effort by the VSB to improve its digital services and better serve the needs of Virginia lawyers. Users are encouraged to provide feedback to help us continue improving the site by emailing [email protected].

Here are six things to try on the new site:

  1. Signing into your account.
    • If you are a Virginia lawyer, an email was sent to the address we have on file informing you of how to log in for the first time.
    • If you currently have a VSB ID and an email associated with your account, the contents of the welcome email are available below.
    • The VSB recommends using a personal email address rather than an employer provided email address as your sign-in username.
  2. Update your address of record and communication preferences. 
    • Use the pencil icon in the address of record field to edit your official address with the VSB.
    • Navigate to the Preferences tab to the left of your profile display to set your optional communications.
  3. Use the Keyword search to find Currently Approved CLE courses.
    • Search “approved courses” and then enter the dates you’re available to learn.
  4. Visit the Lawyer landing page to see the most important items for Virginia lawyers.
    • Click “Lawyer” in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page.
  5. Visit the “Legal Help” landing page to see resources for Virginians in need of legal assistance.
  6. Look up of the Supreme Court of Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct.
    • Click “Rules and Regulations” in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page.
    • Click “Part Six. Integration of the State Bar” to see how our governance fits into the larger Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia.

As the VSB is made aware of areas of confusion we will update this news item to include steps to access necessary functions.

The Virginia State Bar launched a new website and member portal on April 4, 2023, to improve services and access to information for Virginia lawyers and the public.

In addition to the improved design and functionality, the new website is also more secure, with enhanced security measures to protect user data. The site is also fully accessible, with features that allow users with disabilities to navigate the site and access its content.

First-time Sign-in Instructions

Member login procedures have changed, and members will need to activate their new online credentials to sign in. Important to note: you must register with your email address of record and the name listed on your bar card. If you have trouble remembering what your email address of record with the VSB is please contact [email protected].

First: For security reasons you need to set up a new password to gain access to your account. To do this, follow the steps noted below. 

  1. Click the button to open the new system, and then choose “Forgot username?” 

    Sign In to the Lawyer Portal

  2. Enter Your Email Address of Record in the Email Field and Click "Submit"
  3. Email Notification for Username
    You will receive an email from us that will contain your username and a link to return to the sign-in page. Click this link and continue to step 4.
    Remember to check your junk folder for the email. If you do not receive the email, please contact us.
  4. Click "Forgot password?"
  5. Email Notification for Password
    You will receive an email from us that will contain a link to return to set a new password. Click this link and continue to step 6.
  6. Enter your new password, confirm, and click "Submit"

You will now be able to sign in using your email and new password. You will be taken to your personal landing page where you will find information specifically for you.

This is also a good time to look at your profile and check that we have the most up to date information for you. To do this, click on your name in the top right menu where it says "Hi, Your Name". If you are on a mobile device it will appear as a silhouette of a person.

Updating Your Member Information

Active members may use self-service to update their email, phone, or address of record. Please follow these steps. VCC and CCR members will continue to contact [email protected] to request address changes at this time.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. In the Address of Record area, click the pencil icon in the right hand corner
  3. Enter your updated information.
  4. Click "Save & Close"
  5. Refresh your browser window, there may be a short delay as the system updates. Your updates should now be reflected.

Changing Your Password

Virginia lawyers can reset their password at any time from within their member area, or by using the 'Forgot Password' option during the sign in function. The following shows how to change your password after logging in. To see the instructions for using the 'Forgot Password' option see the FAQ item "First-time Sign-in Instructions."

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. On your member area left side panel navigate to your "Preferences" tab.
  3. Under the heading "Change your password" click on "Change password."
  4. Complete the password change form and save. You should now be able to sign in with your new password.

Certifying MCLE Hours

Members may use self-service to report their MCLE hours.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. In your member area click on the "MCLE Records" tab.
  3. In the Report CLE Attendance area, click the "Record CLE" button.
  4. Enter the required information, and "Submit."
  5. Refresh your browser window, there may be a short delay as the system updates. Your updates should now be reflected in the quick view MCLE Attendance Chart.

Viewing Your Past and Current Year MCLE Records

Members may use self-service to view and export their past and current MCLE Records.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. In your member area click on the "MCLE Records" tab.
  3. In the MCLE Records area, click the "Current Year Report" button.
  4. Your current year transcript will generate. You may export it from this page. NOTE: It takes a few minutes for the transcript to generate. The page will appear blank at this time, but it should load.
  5. To generate past, or multiple year reports, click the "Transcript Report" button.
  6. Select the years you would like to generate a transcript for. You may export it from this page. NOTE: It takes a few minutes for the transcript to generate. The page will appear blank at this time, but it should load.

Accessing Fastcase

Members may access Fastcase through their member portal.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. In your member area navigate to your "Fastcase" tab.
  3. In the Fastcase area, click the "Fastcase" button.
  4. You will now be transferred to Fastcase.

Accessing Forms and Downloads

Members may download forms from their member portal including a form requesting a Certificate of Good Standing. They may also access Supreme Court of Virginia forms that require a valid Bar login to access through their member portal. Follow the steps below to access these forms.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. On your member area left side panel navigate to your "Forms and Downloads" tab.
  3. In the Forms and Downloads area, you will find several categories of forms to browse.
  4. Requesting a Certificate of Good Standing.
  5. Accessing the Supreme Court of Virginia Forms.

Submitting and Reviewing Ethics Hotline Questions

Members may go through their member area to submit an ethics question, or through the main website. Lawyers from other states may contact [email protected] to set up a nonmember account and submit ethics questions.

To submit an ethics questions through the lawyer member area follow these steps:

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. On your member area left side panel navigate to your "My Legal Ethics Questions" tab.
  3. On the My Legal Ethics Questions tab you can view both questions that are awaiting a response and completed questions. Additionally, you may access the Ethics Hotline by clicking the "Ethics Form" button.

To submit an ethics questions through the main website follow these steps:

  1. In the primary navigation hover over "Lawyers". It will drop down to show a list of secondary navigation. Click on "Ethics and Conduct".
  2. On the main Legal Ethics page you can read about legal ethics as well as access previously publicized Legal Ethics Opinions. To submit a questions click "The Ethics Hotline" in the tile.
  3. Click "Submit Your Question" after reviewing the information on the Hotline page.

Utilizing the Rules and Regulations

Anyone can read the rules and regulations that define the role and jurisdiction of the VSB, and the rules of professional conduct that dictate lawyer compliance.

  1. Click directly on the Rules & Regulation primary navigation button.
  2. The Rules & Regulations landing page has helpful tiles breaking down a few of the sections of rules. It also features an overview of the structure of the complete Supreme Court of Virginia Rules of Court and how the VSB fits in.
  3. You can click on Part One A. Foreign Attorneys, or Part Six. Integration of the State Bar to go into greater detail. Part Six will drop down to display the seven sections within Part Six.
  4. Once you click on one of the sections you will be taken to a landing page for that section that utilizes accordions to structure the paragraphs, comments, and updates. In the example shown, we have clicked on Section IV. Organization and Government (Paragraphs 1-23).

Setting User Communication Preferences

Virginia lawyers can set their communication preferences and opt out of their information being used for commercial purposes through their member area.

  1. After signing in navigate to your member area by clicking where it says "Hi, Your Name" in the top right corner of the webpage.
  2. On your member area left side panel navigate to your "Preferences" tab.
  3. Review and select the communicaiton preference and commercial use options.

Navigating the VSB Website

Anyone can use the Quick Links and Keyword Search to better locate the service they are looking for.

  1. The Keyword Search is located at the top of any VSB webpage.
  2. Use simple search terms to best utilize the site indexing.
  3. On the VSB homepage we have compiled a few of the most often accessed areas of the VSB website by either lawyers or the public in our Quick Links.

Lawyers have a landing page dedicated to helping them find the services they are looking for on the website that exist outside of their member area.

  1. Click directly on the primary navigation item titled "Lawyers".
  2. Review the information in each tile that better explains where the title link will lead.
  3. At the bottom of the Lawyers landing page, there is a list of common "I want to..." items that may further help drill down where a lawyer may need to go on the VSB website.
