Messy Careers Make for Meaningful Ones

BY: Sharif L. Gray

I thought there was a formula.

Do well in law school. Land a good job. Put your head down, work hard, and steadily climb the ladder. Simple, right?

Except it’s not.

Here’s the truth: careers are messy. They zig when you expect them to zag. They stall when you think you’re gaining speed. Sometimes they fall apart right when everything seems to be coming together. And that’s not a sign that something’s wrong with you.

I used to think people who jumped around or changed directions just hadn’t figured it out yet. Now I know better. Sometimes the smartest, most self-aware thing you can do is pivot. Or start over. Or simply say, “This isn’t working anymore.”

I once took a job that looked perfect on paper—great title, awesome salary, upward trajectory. But a few months in, I dreaded it. I stopped sleeping well. I felt like I was moving away from who I wanted to be and how I wanted to spend my days (and nights) as a lawyer. Moving on was terrifying because it felt like I was throwing my career away.

But, looking back, that decision saved me. It helped me learn to stop chasing a version of success that I did not really want.

If you’re feeling uncertain about where you are, you’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re just human. The clean, curated career paths we see on LinkedIn are often just the highlight reels. What we don’t see are the tough calls, the second-guessing, and the sleepless nights.

The reality is: most of us are figuring it out as we go—even the ones who seem like they’ve got it all mapped out. They just don’t talk about the mess until they’re on the other side of it.

Careers aren’t clean. They’re not color-coded, step-by-step journeys. They’re dynamic. They require you to be honest with yourself and brave enough to move forward even when you’re unsure.

So if your career feels messy, that’s okay. You’re learning. You’re evolving. You’re growing. And the people who’ve “figured it out”? Most of them just kept going long enough to find their place.

Embrace the mess—because one day, you’ll look back and realize it had a purpose.

Keep going.
