YLC Mission

The Young Lawyers Conference is committed to creating and supporting young lawyers as leaders in the bar through service to the public, service to the bar, and professional development opportunities in an inclusive environment that builds on diverse experiences, empowering young lawyers to live up to the high standards and ideals of a Virginia lawyer.

YLC Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Young Lawyers Conference is to:

  1. Provide a means by which young lawyers may actively participate in leadership and activities of the Virginia State Bar;
  2. Support activities that mete the needs of both young lawyers and members of the Bar;
  3. Promote, uphold, and elevate the standards of honor, integrity, and competence in the legal profession;
  4. Improve the legal system and the responsiveness of the profession to the public at large; and,
  5. Foster diversity and inclusion among young lawyers and members of the Bar.

Help the YLC achieve its goals by volunteering to serve as a District Representative, Program or Committee Chair, or a Program or Committee volunteer.

Annual Meeting Programs

YLC volunteers plan a special interest, continuing legal education (CLE) program that takes place during the VSB’s Annual Meeting held in Virginia Beach in June. This showcase CLE often takes the form of “Judiciary Squares”, featuring judges from the Commonwealth and federal benches. During gubernatorial election years the programs committee typically schedules a debate between candidates running for Attorney General. The YLC often co-sponsors additional CLE programs.

Annual Meeting Athletics

An Annual Meeting staple, the “Run in the Sun” 5k foot race, is coordinated by this YLC committee.

Membership Meeting Luncheon

This annual lunch meeting creates an opportunity for fellowship between new and “old” young lawyers. The Board of Governors hosts a meeting in which all members of the Conference participate; an annual report is provided, and a vote is held to elect incoming members of the board. Also during this luncheon, the R. Edwin Burnette, Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year Award is presented.
