The Virginia State Bar Real Property Section has named James L. Windsor as the recipient of the 2024 Traver Award, given each year to honor a lawyer who embodies the highest ideals and expertise in the practice of real estate law.

Traver Award recipients are VSB Real Property Section members who have made significant contributions to the practice of real property law generally and the section specifically and have generously shared their knowledge with others. The award is named for Courtland L. Traver, a forerunner in Virginia real estate law whose outstanding legal ability and willingness to share his knowledge and experience was an inspiration to others.

Windsor is an attorney at Kaufman & Canoles, P.C., where he has worked since 1987. He is the chairman of the Real Estate Claims & Title Insurance Solutions Group and the co-chair of Government & Municipal Law Group at the firm. He has over 38 years of experience in real estate, real property, title insurance, and civil litigation.

Windsor graduated cum laude from James Madison University with a B.S. in 1982 and received his J.D. in 1985 from the University of Richmond School of Law. He has previously received the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Land Title Association in 2015. He is an AV Preeminent® rated lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell and a dedicated, zealous, and strong advocate for his clients.

“[Windsor] has consistently shown a willingness to invest time and energy in guiding and nurturing the next generation of legal minds,” said attorney Paula Caplinger during the award presentation at the Real Property spring meeting in March. “His commitment to mentorship goes beyond professional development, extending into the realms of personal growth and ethical responsibility. This dedication to fostering the success of others is a true embodiment of the values that the Traver Scholar Award seeks to honor.”

Windsor is noted to have tirelessly given his time in teaching seminars and authoring articles and resource materials to benefit his fellow real estate professionals. Windsor has presented over 120 seminars on real estate related topics since 1996.
