Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award

The Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award honors a member of the VSB for setting an example that fellow members can emulate to meet the section’s goal of fostering and encouraging full and equal participation in Virginia’s legal profession where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect and in ensuring that Virginia meets the legal needs of an ever-changing population. The award commemorates the life of Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. and his unceasing devotion to civil rights in our Commonwealth. The inaugural award was presented to Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. in 2012.

The Diversity Section presents the next Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach in June.

Award Criteria

The following criteria will be used as a guide to select the winner of this award:

  • Significant, demonstrable, and outstanding contributions (i) to fostering, encouraging, and facilitating full and equal participation in Virginia’s legal profession where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect and (ii) in ensuring that Virginia meets the legal needs of an ever-changing population in the Commonwealth;
  • Demonstrated dedication to protecting civil and human rights and dignity in the Commonwealth; and/or
  • Participation in corporate and/or community events promote mutual respect, acceptance, cooperation, or tolerance in the Commonwealth.

The Nominating Committee of the Diversity Conference will review applications and select the winner. Members of the Nominating Committee are not eligible to win.

Nomination Instructions and Deadline

To nominate someone for this award, be prepared to submit the following: 1) Nominee’s full name and contact information; 2) In 500 words or less, describe how the nominee satisfies the criteria above; 4) Name, address, and phone number of person(s) submitting nomination.
