Young Lawyers Section Mission

The Young Lawyers Section is committed to creating and supporting young lawyers as leaders in the VSB through service to the public, service to the VSB, and professional development opportunities in an environment that promotes the principles of justice and integrity in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, empowering young lawyers to live up to the high standards and ideals of a Virginia lawyer.

Young Lawyers Section Purpose

The purpose of the Young Lawyers Section is to:

Provide a means by which young lawyers may actively participate in leadership and activities of the VSB;
Support activities that meet the needs of both young lawyers and members of the VSB;
Promote, uphold, and elevate the standards of honor, integrity, and competence in the legal profession;
Improve the legal system and the responsiveness of the profession to the public at large; and,
Foster outreach and engagement among young lawyers and members of the VSB.

Help the YLS achieve its goals by volunteering to serve as a District Representative, Program or Committee Chair, or a Program or Committee volunteer.

Service to the Bar

Annual Meeting Programs

YLS volunteers plan a special interest, continuing legal education (CLE) program that takes place during the VSB’s Annual Meeting held in Virginia Beach in June. This showcase CLE often takes the form of “Judiciary Squares,” featuring judges from the Commonwealth and federal benches. During gubernatorial election years the programs committee typically schedules a debate between candidates running for Attorney General. The YLC often co-sponsors additional CLE programs.

Annual Meeting Athletics

An Annual Meeting staple, the “Run in the Sun” 5k foot race, is coordinated by this YLS committee.

Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner

This annual dinner meeting creates an opportunity for fellowship between new and tenured section members. The Board of Governors hosts a meeting in which all members of the Section participate, an annual report is provided, and a vote is held to elect incoming members of the board. During this dinner, the R. Edwin Burnette, Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year Award is presented.

Service to the Public

Children and the Law

This committee develops new projects to address the unmet legal needs of children in Virginia. Recent programming includes CLE courses, a foster care resource guide, and an initiative to shutdown cyberbullying. See also, the CLSBA’s So You’re 18 handbook.
