Richard E. Garriott Jr. Receives Family Law Service Award
Richard E. Garriott Jr., a founder of Garriott Maurer, PLLC in Virginia Beach, has been awarded the Family Law Service Award by the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section Board of Governors.
The Family Law Service Award is given to an individual or organization “who has consistently given freely of time, talent and energies to provide valuable services in advancing family, domestic relations or juvenile law in Virginia, whether such services are rendered to the Virginia legal community or directly to the citizens of Virginia.”
A graduate of the University of Richmond for both his undergraduate and law degrees, Garriott also holds a master’s degree from Ball State University. Although a highly sought after speaker and faculty lecturer, Garriott has made time throughout his career to serve the profession as both a chair of the VSB Family Law Section Board of Governors in 2014–15 and as the president of the Virginia Bar Association in 2019. He has also been named a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, as well as a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
In a tribute to his civility and broad respect among his peers, eight attorneys, all from different firms, joined together to nominate Garriott. In their nomination letter, the attorneys spoke of his many accomplishments, his dedication to civility, and his important role guiding family law legislation:
"His role as Chair of the Virginia Family Law Coalition, which provides critical input to the General Assembly on proposed and pending legislation that impact family law matters, requires him to monitor legislation, lead discussions with Coalition members, work on studies requested by Delegates/Senators to help better understand bills, and meet with Delegates/Senators. Rich also has testified countless times before House and Senate committees on behalf of the Coalition to help ensure that the rights of parents and children are protected by the laws of Virginia."
The nominating attorneys concluded, “His willingness to give his time in mentoring the next generation of family law attorneys is invaluable … he does all of this with passion, energy, and commitment.”
The Family Law Service Award will be presented at the 41st Annual Family Law Seminar on April 10, 2025, at the Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa in Short Pump.
